The Night Shift That Gains an Hour: What to Pack When Clocks Fall Back (Nov 1, 2026)
STAT Bar TeamLast reviewed

In most of the US, clocks fall back from 2:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, so a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. night shift runs about 13 real hours. Plan for 13, not 12: pack one more snack, more water, and count caffeine by hours worked, not by the clock.
How long is your night shift on Nov 1, 2026?
Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. local time on the first Sunday in November. At that moment the clock goes back to 1:00 a.m., and that hour happens twice (NIST). In 2026 that Sunday is November 1. Clocks change in 48 states (timeanddate.com).
| Your shift on the night of Oct 31 | On the schedule | Real hours worked |
|---|---|---|
| 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. | 12 hours | 13 hours |
| 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. | 8 hours | 9 hours |
| 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. | 8 hours | 8 hours, no change |
| Any shift in Hawaii or most of Arizona | No change | No change |
Hour math from the NIST clock rule. Scheduling explainers such as Duty Pals show the same table. The Navajo Nation in Arizona does change its clocks.
Which shift is the long one
Only a shift that is running at 2:00 a.m. gets the extra hour. If you clock in at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, you will see 1:00 a.m. twice before you go home. A shift that ends before 2:00 a.m., or starts after it, keeps its normal length.
Check your roster and payroll now
How the extra hour is paid depends on your employer and your state. Ask your manager or payroll this week, before the shift. Don't wait until the timesheet comes back.
A side note on the news. The US House passed a bill on July 14, 2026 to make daylight saving time permanent. It still needs the Senate, so it is not law as this goes up (timeanddate.com). The clocks still change on November 1.
What to eat on a 13-hour night
A 13-hour night needs one more eating slot than your usual 12. The repeated hour lands at 1:00 a.m., right in the middle of the shift. So the stretch that grows is the middle of the night, the part between your break meal and the morning handoff.
Put the extra snack there. If you already follow a night shift eating schedule, keep it as it is and add one slot after the second 1:00 a.m. That guide covers the full timing plan, so we won't repeat it here.
The 13-hour packing list
Food
- One real meal, the same one you would pack for a 12.
- One more snack than you usually bring. Pick something shelf-stable and pocket-sized that you can eat standing up.
- For ideas that travel well, see our list of night shift snacks and our guide to protein bars for shift workers.
Water
- Plan one more refill than usual. An extra hour on your feet is an extra hour of drinking.
- Know where the nearest fill station is before the floor gets busy.
Backup
- Keep one emergency snack in your bag that you never eat on a normal night.
- On Halloween weekend, with a holiday night and a clock change stacked together, assume the cafeteria or vending machine may let you down.
How to pace caffeine when the night gains an hour
Count by hours worked, not clock time
The wall clock runs one hour behind your body on this shift. When the clock says 4:00 a.m., you have already worked one hour more than you normally would at 4:00 a.m. If you usually stop caffeine a set number of hours into your shift, keep counting hours from when you clocked in. Don't go by the time on the wall.
Don't add a dose just because the shift is longer
A longer night is not a reason to raise your daily total. For most adults, the FDA has cited 400 milligrams a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects. People vary a lot in how sensitive they are (FDA). FDA lists jitters, trouble sleeping and an upset stomach among the signs of too much. Stay inside your usual amount. For how long one dose sticks around, see how long caffeine lasts.
Have caffeine with food
Pair your caffeine with your extra snack, so both land in the same slot.
Where STAT fits
A STAT Energy Bar is built for that extra slot, for when you can't stop for a real meal. Each 52g bar has 100mg of caffeine and 0g added sugar (not a low calorie food). Chocolate has 16g of protein and gets its caffeine from coffee fruit extract. Peanut Butter Espresso has 17g of protein and Salted Caramel Coffee has 19g. Both use real coffee plus coffee fruit extract. One bar is one known 100mg, so it is easy to count against your usual daily total. It is shelf-stable and fits in a pocket or the bag you already carry. Read more about our caffeinated protein bars, or shop STAT before the 31st.
100mg caffeine per bar. For healthy adults. Not for children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or caffeine sensitive, consult a healthcare professional.
