Peak Season Warehouse Shifts: How to Eat and Pace Caffeine Through 10s and 12s

STAT Bar TeamLast reviewed

Peak season in a warehouse is the holiday rush, which the National Retail Federation counts as November 1 through December 31, and it's when many sites move to 10- and 12-hour shifts. Getting through it comes down to food you can finish on a short break, caffeine kept light and spread out, and a plan for Black Friday week.

What is peak season in a warehouse?

Peak season is the stretch around the holidays when order volume rises and warehouses add shifts and seasonal hires. For retail, NRF defines the holiday season as November 1 through December 31.

If you're new this year, you're far from alone. The National Retail Federation expects retailers to hire between 325,000 and 375,000 seasonal workers in 2026, in line with an estimated 356,000 last year. That's a retail figure, not a count of warehouse jobs, but it shows how much hiring the season brings.

So what months are peak season, and how long does it last? November and December. When it starts and ends at your site depends on your employer, so check the schedule you were given. For a new hire, peak season in a warehouse simply means the busiest weeks of the year, when shifts run longer.

Can your employer make you work 12-hour shifts?

Under federal law, generally yes for adults. The Fair Labor Standards Act sets no limit on the hours employees 16 and older can work in a week, but covered, non-exempt employees must get overtime pay of at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek.

Here is how the US Department of Labor puts it:

  • "There is no limit in the Act on the number of hours employees aged 16 and older may work in any workweek."
  • Unless exempt, covered employees "must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay."
  • "The FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or regular days of rest, unless overtime is worked on such days."

Is mandatory overtime legal? Federal law doesn't ban it for adults; it requires overtime pay when it applies. Some states and union contracts add their own rules, so check your state labor office and your contract or handbook. The Department of Labor keeps a list of state labor offices with contact details for each one.

This is general information, not legal advice.

What breaks do you get on a 12-hour peak shift?

The Department of Labor is direct about it: "Federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks." When employers do offer short breaks, usually about 5 to 20 minutes, federal law counts them as paid work time. Meal periods, typically at least 30 minutes, are not work time and are not paid. The rules behind this are 29 CFR 785.18 (rest periods) and 29 CFR 785.19 (meal periods).

Your site's schedule and any state rules set what you actually get, so plan food around your shortest break. This is general information, not legal advice.

If your site has you working back-to-back doubles, see how to get through a 16-hour shift.

What to pack for a 12-hour peak season shift

Most of the work happens the night before:

  • Eat a real meal before you leave. It covers the first stretch before your first break.
  • Pack one meal for the long break and two or three things you can finish in a couple of minutes for the short ones.
  • Keep it sealed in your locker or the break area, wherever your site lets you eat.

Food safety matters more on a 12-hour day, because your lunch sits for a long time. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says: "Never leave food out of refrigeration over 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90 °F, food should not be left out more than 1 hour." On a 12-hour shift, that means a cooler with ice packs or a spot in the break-room fridge for anything perishable.

NIOSH's training for nurses on shift work also suggests you "Avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy foods" during long shifts. The logic carries over to the warehouse floor.

How to pace caffeine through a 10- or 12-hour shift

Pacing caffeine is about timing, not one big dose when the rush hits. Three sources line up:

  • NIOSH's shift-work training for nurses suggests keeping caffeine light during your shift.
  • In the same training, NIOSH says night shift workers who rely on caffeine to stay alert "could consume it at the beginning of the shift."
  • Sleep researchers writing in the Southwest Journal of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep suggest small amounts of caffeine every 1 to 2 hours while you're at work, which they say can be more effective than a large amount once or twice a shift.

The plain version: count milligrams, not cups, and spread them out instead of taking one big dose when the rush hits.

For the math on spacing it out, see how to space out caffeine across a 12-hour shift.

Our recommendation: STAT Energy Bar

STAT Energy Bar: 100 mg caffeine, 16-19 g protein, 0 g added sugar.

For a peak season locker, our recommendation is STAT Energy Bar. Each 52g bar is sealed, individually wrapped and shelf-stable, with no refrigeration needed, and it eats in a couple of minutes on a short break. Count each bar as one 100mg dose when you tally your caffeine for the shift.

We've all been there: the line is backed up, the break is ten minutes and the break room is a long walk away. That's the moment STAT Energy Bar was made for, when seconds count. Each bar has 100mg of caffeine for energy and alertness, about a strong cup of coffee, plus 16 to 19g of protein and 0g added sugar, in one wrapper you can finish in two minutes. Most protein bars have no caffeine at all. STAT has 100mg, plus maca, ashwagandha, cordyceps and reishi, which are there for flavor. If you like chocolate, the Chocolate bar has 16g of protein (28% DV) and gets its caffeine from coffee fruit extract. If you're a coffee person, Peanut Butter Espresso has 17g (31% DV) and Salted Caramel Coffee has 19g (34% DV); both use real coffee plus coffee fruit extract. Every flavor has 2g total sugars and 200 to 210 calories. All three contain milk and soy; Chocolate and Salted Caramel Coffee contain almonds, and Peanut Butter Espresso contains peanuts. Peak season warehouse shifts: FAQ

What is peak season in a warehouse?

It's the holiday rush, when order volume rises and warehouses add shifts and seasonal workers. For retail, NRF counts the holiday season as November 1 through December 31.

What months are peak season?

November and December for the holiday retail season, per NRF. Your site's exact start and end dates depend on your employer.

How long does peak season last?

About two months, November 1 through December 31, by NRF's definition. Some sites ramp up earlier or wind down later, so check your schedule.

Can my employer make me work 12 hour shifts?

Under federal law, generally yes for adults. The Fair Labor Standards Act sets no limit on hours for employees 16 and older, but covered non-exempt workers must get at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. State law and contracts can add rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is mandatory overtime legal?

Federal law doesn't prohibit it for adults; it requires overtime pay when it applies. Some states and union contracts set their own limits, so check your state labor office. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you get a break on a 12 hour shift?

Federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks. If your employer offers short breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes, they count as paid work time; meal periods of at least 30 minutes usually don't. State law may require more. This is general information, not legal advice.

What food to pack for a 12 hour shift?

One real meal for the long break, plus two or three sealed things you can finish in a couple of minutes for short breaks. Keep anything perishable cold: USDA says not to leave food out of refrigeration for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90 °F.

How much caffeine is in a STAT bar?

100mg in every flavor, about a strong cup of coffee. Chocolate gets it from coffee fruit extract; Peanut Butter Espresso and Salted Caramel Coffee use real coffee plus coffee fruit extract.

Peak season is two months of long days, and the small stuff adds up: what's in your locker, when you eat, and how you spread your caffeine. Pack the night before and count your milligrams. Shop all three STAT flavors.
